+verb | Solar Heat Traveler

Afro Monk | Dubstep & Glitch Hop Blog - Fri, 2011-03-25 02:04

One of my all time favorite producers out there, +verb, has a release coming out! This release is being put out by Vermin St a great group of people behind it. This is everything you’d want in a release and few unique remixes along for the ride. There are three original tracks by Dominic and another three quality remixes. JerkOFF shines on this release with a such beauty. Playing this song never gets old. Seriously. It’s an instant classic in my book. We’ve also just begun because the rest of the tracks only show off some of the freshest beats done by +verb. The three takes of Puddleglum add the perfect amount of spice to an already original tune. Just when you’ve fallen in love jerkOFF in comes Freddy Todd to bring some extra hype with perfectly well placed samples.

+verb has so much more ahead and this is the perfect place to start checking out his material if you haven’t already. You can be sure to hear more from +verb as he begins gearing up for possible tour dates in the future. I know I’m excited to finally catch this guy playing out. He also has a ton more release where this came from. Be sure to check out his soundcloud and hear some of the amazing work he does. Big up to Vermin St for releasing this one. Top quality. This is officially due out this upcoming Tuesday! Be sure to pick this one up!

ill Gates | Artist Spotlight

Afro Monk | Dubstep & Glitch Hop Blog - Wed, 2011-03-23 11:04

ill Gates aka Dylan has some brand new freshness for us all! Celebrating the soft launch of the new and improved illgates.com he has put out a new mix via Memekast! He has lots of big plans coming up and this is only the beginning. He has been hard at work touring all around the world spreading the music. I can’t think of many others out there who have been creating such a rift with music around the globe.

This mix is filled with such energy and fresh tunes that I’ve listened to it a few times already. This is only a small glimpse into what it is to catch ill Gates live. I had the pleasure of catching him live this past week at SXSW. Dylan is back with some heavy dance music and rocks a crowd like no other. You’ll know when he’s in the room and when he’s behind the mixer.

Without a doubt the highlight of my SXSW experience was staying up till sunrise with Dylan. Ever since I was able to catch his workshop in Seattle at Decibel Festival I’ve told everyone that I’d love to just be friends with ill Gates. He left such a mark on me and had such a sense of control of life that he’s one of those people you just want to be around. It was a honor to talked for a few hours with him. The guy is honestly as real as they come. I’ve met a lot of people in this community and hands down Dylan is one of the most unique and impressive people out there. His dedication and love for this community is unmatched. Hell the guy even has a specific type of diet so he can sleep less and be less cranky on tour. Even if you don’t dig this mix or his sound know that ill Gates encompasses everything you’d want in a person, friend, and musician. There aren’t many that I can say this about.

Look out for his upcoming ill Methodology online workshops coming soon. This is something all you upcoming producers might want to look into. The program is very affordable and can tell you Dylan is one of the best teachers out there. After seeing his workshop in person I can tell you this isn’t just about learning production but learning how to approach anything not just music. You’ll have to catch one of his workshops or online courses to know what I mean.

Nothing but respect and love to Dylan.
I can not say enough positive things about this man.

Be sure to check out the NEW ill Gates site!
Much more to be added soon!

ill-esha | Only Fair | Kickstart Video Fund!

Afro Monk | Dubstep & Glitch Hop Blog - Mon, 2011-03-21 17:02

ill-esha is working on possibly making a music video for her track, Only Fair. She had decided to launch a kickstart campaign to help fund the project. The bar is set to $3,000 and it needs YOUR help! The video above goes into detail what she is hoping to accomplish with this video. We all know it’s a hard time to produce top quality products and with the decrease in album sales and labels lacking the budget this is her way of giving back a piece of herself in this video.

There are many benefits to contributing to this project based on how much you donate. What many of you don’t realize is that if the project does not hit its goal you will be refunded however much you have donated. Please spread this project as much as you can as I know that if there is anyone who has put in the time and effort into the community it’s Elysha.

I spent the past couple of days with her and every moment my faith is restored in where the music is going and seeing a loving heart behind the music. There’s so much music out there and seems to lack soul and seeing her preform and being around her you can just feel it. I hope you can give a little to this project and see it manifest itself into reality. Once the song is released all the profits made from commercial sales will be donated to the emergency relief effort in Japan.

Bass From Above / Glitchdrop / Subsynthesis

Afro Monk | Dubstep & Glitch Hop Blog - Sun, 2011-03-20 12:14

Subsynthesis.com and Glitchdrop.com, two of our fave blog friends, released their debut compilation album today, “Bass From Above.” The album features new and unreleased tracks from some of our favorite artists in the glitch/bass scene. In order to make the album as high quality as possible they recruited the professional mastering services of Bil Bless (Bless Records) who did a fantastic job in making the album sound full, vibrant and cohesive. Bass From Above is a must have for your collection. You can stream and download all of the tracks for free from Bass From Above BandCamp. PLEASE consider donating for the download, as all proceeds will be given directly to the Japanese Red Cross to support our disaster relief efforts there and to benefit those affected by the earthquake and tsunami throughout the Pacific. This is an extraordinarily charitable and generous cause and I hope everyone that enjoys the album will consider helping with the dire situation in Japan!

Sugarpill – Mind Machine EP

Afro Monk | Dubstep & Glitch Hop Blog - Tue, 2011-03-15 12:12

Sugarpill is a glitch/bass producer out of Los Angeles. I’ve been bumping his latest release “Mind Machine EP” in my car a lot lately.

My fave track off the ep is “Peeing on the Seat” which opens at a slow burn, combining 808 snare rolls, a glitched out Hammond, and a deep bass line before the drop where party moves into full throttle with heavy lazer bass, soaring synths, and one of the more colorful hiphop vocal samples used in recent memory. Here’s previews of the tracks from the release:

You can grab a copy of his debut ep for Simplify Recordings through addictech.com: Mind Machine ep

He also has just posted this dope track which is coming out March 20th on the Bass from Above compilation through subsynthesis.com and glitchdrop.com.  I highly recommend you grab this free release which features brand new tracks from some of the best glitch/bass producers on the scene right now.  Straight up fire! Grab it here: Bass From Above

Bird of Prey | LIVE on Glitch.fm

Afro Monk | Dubstep & Glitch Hop Blog - Fri, 2011-03-11 17:06

This week I’ve got a Fire Friday Mix for all of you from, Bird of Prey. I haven’t done much coverage on this artist but he is one hell of a talented producers. After hearing this mix I’m really looking forward to be meeting him next week at SXSW and sharing the line up with him on tons of showcases that I’ll be playing.

This mix is one of those mixes that you may not really know what you’re getting yourself into but man does it whomp. There are some really great original tracks on here that shine! It’s also great to see a producers just gliding through a set so smoothly. Everything just has a great natural flow to it.

This was streamed and recorded live on Glitch.fm. The bass stream radio guys have been crushing it and having tons of amazing special guest. I’m really glad they save these so others can enjoy in the future. I have heard so much about Bird of Prey but it’s great to sick back and listen to this mix. Truly looking forward to seeing Torin drop some original tunes now.

If you are around Austin, Texas next week and will be at SXSW i’ll be putting something together for everyone. There’s a LOT going on! I will be there representing Glitch.fm for TONS of showcases. Expect a major post tomorrow with a break down of everything.

Chris B | Whats Your Fantasy

Afro Monk | Dubstep & Glitch Hop Blog - Tue, 2011-03-01 16:07

Chris B is one of the hardest working producers out there. He is extremely tedious with every little sound. He’s not one of those guys who bangs out tracks and doesn’t invest that extra time. I’ve had pleasure of playing Def Con with him in Vegas and getting to hang out with him last time he was in Texas.

Not only does his dedication impress me about Chris but his attitude is one of the best out there. He’s on the right path and has this new release on Simplify Records that speaks loud and clear! Whats Your Fantasy! I spend endless hours a day searching for something melodic with sexy synths but will keep the crowds grooving. I talk to popular producers and drilling them when they start moving to an aggressive sound and ask who they know who’s doing the chill stuff now.

Chris B is the answer and this, Whats Your Fantasy, release is just what I have been looking for. Imagine the sounds of Sugarpill melting into Mimosa and having something entirely new come out. The title track is one of the best tunes I’ve heard in a long time. On The Grind brings a sexy new twist to the Glitch-hop sound with some ill vocal samples sprinkled all over it. Don’t even get me started on the track with Luvstep’s legend, Gladkill.

Be sure to pick up this release on Additech when it hits the store this Friday!
Much respect and love to my homie Chris B!
Thank you for keeping it real!

Gyouro | Coldplay – Fix You Remix

Afro Monk | Dubstep & Glitch Hop Blog - Mon, 2011-02-28 22:11

Every once in awhile a producer comes along that has been in slumber and totally blows me away. I’ve been a huge fan of Gyouro ever since I discovered Gladkill awhile back. He put a mix together with Boris and it’s been on repeat for months now. The moment Boris came into town there was one thing I had to ask him… What’s the deal with Gyouro?! Apparently Gyouro has been making music for awhile not but hasn’t really released it since didn’t think many people were interested in his music. Yeah, boy is he wrong! Nothing but respect but I freaked out and told Boris that it’d be my mission to get his name out there. I just got a call from Boris and he tipped me off that he was about to send me a Coldplay remix from none other than Gyouro!!!

All I could think was OMG OMG COLDPLAY REMIX!!! Damn and did it satisfy my need for something new from him. This track is a sexy melodic bass heavy remix that you’d expect everything you’d want in a Coldplay remix. I have a feeling this is only the beginning of what is to come. I heard a few other clips while Boris was here so I’m looking to make it my job right now to sign this guy and make sure he gets the attention he deserves clearly could have.

DOWNLOAD: Coldplay – Fix You (Gyouro remix)

Now for all of you who want more be sure to check out that mix I was telling you about….
Be sure to check this out. One of the best mixes easy. Top 5 favorites ever actually…

OH NO!!!.. IT’S DUBZILLA!!!

Afro Monk | Dubstep & Glitch Hop Blog - Mon, 2011-02-28 21:49

Obsession brings enlightenment.
Will “Dubzilla” Bauer from Davis, California is a madman! His great love for bass music is bringing him to great heights in production. From making remixes like his Dub Fx – Fly With Me (Dubzilla remix) to making bangers like his tune entitled, “Skittles”, which have samples from the movie, “The Hangover”. Stay locked, I see more from him in the future for sure.

Enjoy the free download!

Dubzilla – Skittles

More at his SoundCloud, keep locked cause there’s more on the way!

Cheers,

Livid Instruments | Ohm, Block, Code, & DIY Controllers

Afro Monk | Dubstep & Glitch Hop Blog - Fri, 2011-02-25 18:06

Livid Instruments has to be one of my favorite companies out there and I don’t even own one of their products yet. Livid is known for their controllers and software for DJing and VJing. They are the ones responsible for some of my favorite controllers out there: Ohm series, The Block, and the new Code. Their craft is unmatched in the controller department and create some of the best stuff out there hands down.

I’ve been rocking an APC40 for over a year now and have totally beaten it up. All the knob caps are slowly coming off and overall getting some serious tear with time. I’ve looked around for a better solution and it always seems to come back to Livid. After doing some research it’s obvious that they are who I’m going with next. The software and diversity that their controllers have is unmatched. Also the build quality is probably the best around especially if you are a traveling performer.

Right now I’d say if you’re looking to step your game up and do some serious sequencing or live setups the Livid controllers are probably what you have been looking for. I’m glad I started off with the APC40 and eventually added a launch pad but it’s time to evolve. There are endless amounts of options possible with these controllers.

Overall I’m a huge supporter of Livid and can’t wait to upgrade to their products. I highly recommend looking into the Ohm series if you’re comfortable with the APC40 already. Also if you’re thinking about building a monomer or use a launchpad check out the Block. The Code is also a very versatile product that almost anyone could figure out how to add to their set.

The last thing I’m going to say is that the Livid people understand what it is to be an artist and have a unique style and look so they are totally open to making a custom design for you. You can mix and match all sorts of enclosure options and led colors. Also if you’re the DIY type of person they sell their brain and addons so you can build your own custom controller with their rotaries and buttons. They make it so easy for anybody to get behind them.

Go check out their website!!!
Livid Instruments!
